CNS Foundation Announces 2023 Winners of Multiple Awards in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Schaumburg, Ill,. July 10, 2023—The CNS Foundation is pleased to announce the winners in four categories of awards in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Each recipient will be honored at the 2023 CNS Annual Meeting in Washington D.C., September 9-13, 2023.
Research in health care disparity is important and I am thrilled that the CNS Foundation is one of the first neurosurgery foundations providing funding support in this area. The CNS Foundation committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has created some of the first awards in this area,” said CNS Foundation Chair, Martina Stippler, MD. “We could not do this without the support of the CNS Foundation Board, and our generous donors. Thank you, Medtronic Stryker, and the many generous individual donors whose gifts make these extraordinary learning opportunities possible.”
“Over the next two years we will share the data resulting from the portfolio of these awards,” said Tiffany Hodges, CNS Foundation committee chair of the DEI Pillar. “We hope to learn what might make us better leaders for our colleagues and staff, as well as better practitioners for our patients and their families. I am looking forward to the results from our awardees.”
A total of eleven winners have been announced in four award categories:
DEI Scholar Award
Each individual will receive $14,000 to be used to examine, understand, and report the presence, or causes, of health care disparities in neurosurgery. They will report their findings to the CNS Foundation and the CNS in 2024.

DEI Pilot Project
Each individual will receive $17,000 for an active study to implement, test, and report results of an intervention hypothesized to correct a known health care disparity/ies and/or improve diversity in the neurosurgery workforce. They will report their findings to the CNS Foundation and the CNS in 2024.

DEI Impact Project
A prize of $5,000 recognizes work done by a neurosurgeon for their outstanding DEI and community engagement work to share best practices in addressing disparity in equity and inclusion. Look for a report on Dr. Goodwin’s work in the Congress Quarterly.

DEI Pathway to Neurosurgery Think Tank
Five awardees will collaborate for a year to develop best practices for the successful Pathway to Neurosurgery program. Each individual will receive a prize of $3,000. They will report their findings to the CNS Foundation and the CNS in 2024.
